That's why destination weddings can make more financial sense than couples expect: you're not automatically paying for every guest's hotel, meals, and drinks the way you would at a wedding at home. Still, don't choose a resort based on a 'free wedding package' headline — that's where people get themselves into trouble.

The package is the foundation, not always the full cost. Typical ranges: a basic package runs $800-$2,500, a mid-tier package runs $2,500-$5,000, and a premium package runs $5,000-$12,000+. Higher-level packages may include more floral design, upgraded ceremony locations, cocktail hour, a reception, photography, entertainment, or couple amenities. A legal ceremony add-on typically adds $800-$1,600 in legal, notary, interpreter, translation, and documentation-related costs — exact requirements and fees vary by nationality, marital history, venue, and wedding date. Many couples choose to legally marry at home and have a symbolic ceremony in Costa Rica instead, which simplifies the paperwork while still giving you the full wedding experience.

Resorts don't all present these costs the same way — some show one overall total, others break the invoice into vendor cost, service fee, tax, travel fee, setup fee, and outside vendor access fee or day pass.
