I checked 4 regions of the Dominican Republic for seaweed. Here's where your wedding photos won't have a problem.

I was in Punta Cana on this same trip, and I didn't get in the ocean once. Not because I didn't want to. Because the seaweed was bad enough that tractors were running constant loads of it off the beach, all day, every day I was there.

Two days later I was in Miches, in front of Secrets and Dreams Playa Esmeralda. Virtually none.

If you're planning a Dominican Republic wedding, you already know sargassum is the thing nobody wants to bring up and everybody's secretly worried about. I visited 4 regions on this trip, from the north coast down to the south, specifically to compare it. Miches was the standout.

Here's what I actually saw, not the highlight reel version. There was some seaweed sitting directly in front of the resort the week I was there. Walk a little to the right, gone. Walk a little to the left, also gone. Most guests were swimming right in front of the property with zero issue.

I went left. Past a turn in the shoreline, the water goes still and clear, almost like bathwater. That's where I got in every day.

So the honest answer for a couple planning a beach ceremony here: check conditions close to your date, same as you would anywhere on this coast. But compared to what I watched happen in Punta Cana on the same trip, this is about as good as it gets on the DR's Atlantic side.

If your wedding date lands during peak sargassum season and a clean beach matters to your photos, this is one of the properties I point to first. I can't promise zero seaweed on any given week (nobody honestly can), but I've now seen the difference between this coastline and Punta Cana with my own eyes, not from a report.

Any adults-only group fits Secrets Playa Esmeralda well. A mixed group works too, as long as you're fine with some guests staying on the Dreams side, since the resorts share amenities but split adults-only from family-friendly.

Where I'd send you somewhere else: if you want one resort where the whole group, kids included, stays together in the same section with guaranteed access to a private pool, look at Zemi Miches instead. I love a few of their venues, and they let you buy out entire sections so your group isn't sharing space with unrelated guests. Playa Esmeralda doesn't offer that kind of section buyout.

This resort sits about 90 minutes from the airport. That's not a dealbreaker, but it's not nothing either. If your group is only booking 3 nights, I'd steer you toward a closer property. The drive eats into a short trip more than it should, and I think most people who only book 3 nights here end up wishing they'd stayed longer anyway. Once you're there, you feel it.

I visited 8 resorts total on this trip, so I have a real basis for comparison, and I'll be straight with you: Dominican Republic all-inclusive food in general isn't the region's strong suit, and that's true across the industry, not just here. I've yet to meet a genuine foodie who was wowed by an all-inclusive kitchen anywhere.

One property did surprise me on this trip: Moon Palace Grand's food was genuinely good, better than I expected walking in. I'll get into that one separately. For Playa Esmeralda, the dining is what you'd expect at this price point, solid but not the reason to book. One thing I did like: most of the restaurants sit clustered together near the Secrets Preferred Club, which makes moving between them easy if your group is staying on that side.
